The move comes weeks after centre had restored Internet access on January 25 in the region but only for select whitelisted websites that didn't include any social media services. Notably, the Section 66A of IT Act was struck down by the Supreme Court back in and the top court even ordered the various state governments to sensitise cops about the same last year. To recall, centre had banned all Internet access in the region back in August last year ahead of the nullification of Article of the constitution.

People are installing VPNs to enable them to access social media sites. In January, the government issued a list of white-listed websites which can be accessed. All other websites, including social media platforms remain blocked. But the restoration of mobile internet 2G in Kashmir after nearly six months generated little hope due to extremely slow speed.

The bond also bars use of VPNs, Wifi, encrypted files, videos and uploading of photos. All USB ports of the computer will have to be disabled also. The business house is also required to provide complete access to all its content and infrastructure as and when required by security agencies. I have respect for the prime minister as everybody else should have. But I feel very sad that he is being misled or he is willfully misleading the country. What rights do Kashmiris have right now? I heard many were beaten up by the army when they found VPN apps installed in their phones. Virtual Private Networks, or VPN, allow users to mask their location and browse the internet more securely.

The government has not explained why access was restored to such a limited number of websites. In South Kashmir, this has given rise to a new kind of tension between civilians and the army. According to residents in several Kulgam villages, army personnel allegedly check the phones of youth for VPN apps. If such apps are found, the youth are allegedly thrashed.

VPN in Kashmir and Recalling My Shanghai Trip

Sanam Aijaz, a television journalist, was travelling from Srinagar to Pulwama on Monday when he was stopped by army personnel at a checkpoint near Lethpora area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

When I told him I am using one, he got furious. He abused me and told me — you are using this VPN to spread terrorism. According to Aijaz, he would have been beaten up if a local policeman near the checkpoint had not recognised him. In Damhal Hanjipora, the fear of being caught with VPN applications has been fuelled by a fresh incident. Several reasons have been floated.

Others said it was because of mobile internet. According to him, the army reacted after a stone allegedly hit a soldier on patrol. No case was registered in the incident, he added.

Another way in which VPN use is being controlled in Kashmir is through written undertakings taken from broadband internet users.

Broadband remains barred to most ordinary Kashmiris, who must rely on slow 2G internet on mobile phones. But organisations and companies providing essential services have been allowed access to broadband. Private internet service providers in Kashmir say they asking for a written undertaking from such users, promising that their internet connections will not be used to access social networks, proxies or VPN applications.

The undertaking also says that no wireless internet or WiFi access will be given to the customer and only a Local Area Network of LAN-based wire connection would be functional. LAN refers to a network of connected devices that exist within a specific location. There are more conditions in the undertakings reviewed by Scroll. An official from a major internet service provider in Srinagar claimed they had not been prompted by security agencies to ask their customers for guarantees.

We are doing it on our own. But another official, from a different private internet service provider in Srinagar, said a copy of the undertaking had to be submitted to the government. Otherwise, why would internet service providers be demanding them all of a sudden? After scraping the article from Indian constitution on 5th August the internet services especially the mobile phone internet remained suspended. The service was later revised on 25th Jan after being suspended nearly for six months, but as per the official statement the service could only be used to access websites approved by the administration.

Now ask each other which VPN they use has been everyday affair in Kashmir. I being in Delhi has not felt the pain of being in communication restrictions but I could relate to the situation they are facing.

Although, I recently visited the valley and experienced the same situation but being there for a quite shot time, it was easy for me to overcome the situation. But with this message I got my nerves up and remembered when last year I was on a visit to Shanghai in China and faced the same situation. I could not check most of the websites then which I used check every day.

This was the time when I came to know VPN. So, as we know that China has banned most of the social media platforms like Facebook, Google, WhatsApp etc but not internet. Alternatively they have their own social media like WeChat, TaoBoa etc. The point I want to highlight is that China is not actually limiting people to communicate but restricting use of the apps and websites which are mostly developed and operated from west. But when it comes to Kashmir the entires communication is being shut.

There has been many occasions when the internet and mobile communications has been shut in Kashmir and this time it was for more than 6 months, even after only 2G services are restored. This has definitely affected people and has hit the economy of Kashmir.

During this time many people liked to visit Kashmir to enjoy snow and go for the snow skating in Gulmarg but they could not share their memories on their social media handles.

Situation like this has been the everyday affair and people are used to it. Now this has become the new normal in Kashmir. Tourists visiting Kashmir would definitely feel the difference without internet. Right now being the best time to visit Kashmir to enjoy the snow slopes and snow skating in Gulmarg. One should definitely have VPN in their phones if they want to access the 2G internet services to share their moments with the peers around their virtual world.

But it may have some adverse effects either in the form of data loss or some times it could take you into a legal trouble. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. However, Kashmiris are raising their voice against illegal Indian occupation and brutalities of the Indian forces by accessing the said sites through VNP and proxy servers.

As per a report released by international news organisation, Reuters, India has detained hundreds of Kashmiris and banned communications after ending special status of occupied Kashmir on August 5, last year. The news agency wrote, police say they have identified more than Kashmiris using social media and search for more such people is underway.

Police spokesman told Reuters that cases had also been registered against several people who accessed social networking sites through proxy servers. Aadil Altaf, 37, a businessman in Srinagar, told Reuters that he had downloaded a dozen VPN apps on his phone and if the Indian administration blocked one of them, he would use another.

A woman, Salima Jan said that she used a proxy server for video chat with her son, studying in a college in Chandigarh, India. An office-holder of Kashmir Telecom told the news agency that Indian software engineers were trying their best to make VPNs ineffective in occupied Kashmir and they had also blocked some VPNs. However, people become connected to some more VPNs. Name 0ptional. E-mail 0ptional will not be published required. Website 0ptional. Notify me of follow-up comments by email.
